MIGUEL OTERO and EDWARD OLIVER WOLCOTT Two very colorful Western politicians circa 1900. Signatures: "Edward O. Wolcott/Ap 21. 99 Colorado" and on verso "Miguel A. Otero/Governor of New Mixico/Washington D.C./Dec 21st 1898", 6½x3¼. A youthful EDWARD OLIVER WOLCOTT (1848-1905) joined the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. After graduating from Harvard Law School, he moved to Colorado to practice law. An able orator active in Republican politics, he was elected to the state legislature and then to two terms as U.S. Senator (1889-1901). His attempt to formulate a compromise position on the currency question - gold standard vs. free coinage of silver - which dominated the 1896 Presidential election - earned him the enmity of both sides. Hence, he was denied re-nomination as the Republican candidate in 1900. (Publicity surrounding his divorce that same year probably didn't help his prospects either. It was said that his wife favored "tea and crumpets", while Wolcott preferred "rum and strumpets."). MIGUEL OTERO (1859-1944), the middle of three generations of New Mexico politicians bearing that name, was Governor of the New Mexico Territory (1897-1906). His father had been a territorial representative in Congress; his son would be a district court judge in Santa Fe. Otero, a protégé of President McKinley, had to struggle to retain the appointment when Teddy Roosevelt succeeded McKinley, eventually losing it. He later served as State Treasurer (1909-1911) and, having by now become a Democrat, was appointed by President Wilson as marshal of the Panama Canal (1917-1921). In 1935, Otero published the first volume of a 3-book autobiography. The first volume, My Life on the Frontier, recounts Otero's first hand acquaintance with such Western legends as Wild Bill Hickok, Kit Carson, General George Custer, Doc Holliday, Bat Masterson and Jesse James.
